Humor in the Crisis
Clown organizations working in crisis and war regions
Talks and Panel discussion
Monday 11/30/15 (7 pm)
At KosmosTheater
Organizations like Clowns without Borders and Red Noses Clowndoctors often carry out missions in regions of war and crisis, as well as in refugee camps in their own countries. For a short time they bring laughter into the lives of people who are suffering due to traumatic experiences and coping with a daily life in which there is no place for humor.
The work of these organizations will be presented in brief talks, and the speakers will explore what kind of social and artistic benefits can emerge from this work.
Speakers:
Annette Grömminger (AUT): Founder of Clowns without Borders Austria
Karola Sakotnik (AUT): Emergency Smile (RED NOSES International)
Hilary Chaplain (USA): The Big Apple Circus Clown Care Hospital Program
Karin Bergstrand (SWE): Member of Clowns without Borders Sweden
Moderation: Marty Huber (AUT): Queer-feminist activist and performance theorist

“Spaghetti” is the incredibly funny story of a waiter who opens his own restaurant.
In this clown classic created in the 5th generation of the famous Italian Colombaioni circus family, the great Nani Colombaioni (1921-1999), primarily known from Frederico Fellini’s films “La Strada” and “I Clown,” played the waiter. After his death no one slipped into this role for twelve years, until Nani’s son Leris offered it to Lily Curcio, who he thought was the only one that could fill these “big clown shoes” – metaphorically speaking.
The piece is about opening a new restaurant. The waiter worked for months to prepare for the opening, only then to celebrate with too much champagne on the big day – and that before the first customer even shows up. When this customer – played by the wonderfully elegant Vanderleia Will – appears, naturally everything that could go wrong does. An explosion of gags lights up before our eyes and the poor guest has to suffer more than she gets to eat.
The best kind of slapstick comedy, interpreted by outstanding actresses. A unique opportunity to see this classic. Don’t miss it!
Seres de Luz Teatro was founded in 1994 by Argentinian Lily Curcio. She completed her clown training with the biggest and best clowns around the world. She works as an actress, clown, and puppeteer, as well as director. They have toured from South America across Europe to Taiwan.
Vanderleia Will is making a guest appearance. In 2013 she was given the status “living Brazilian cultural heritage” for her clown character Dona Bilica. Her first performance at clownin was in 2008 in the sensational piece “De Malas Prontas.” In 2012 she and Pepe Nunez opened their own circus (Circo Dona Bilica) in Florianopolis, Brazil, where Lily Curcio found her second home and where they perform almost daily.
