Discourse
Humor in the Crisis
Clown organizations working in crisis and war regions
Talks and Panel discussion
Monday 11/30/15 (7 pm)
At KosmosTheater
Organizations like Clowns without Borders and Red Noses Clowndoctors often carry out missions in regions of war and crisis, as well as in refugee camps in their own countries. For a short time they bring laughter into the lives of people who are suffering due to traumatic experiences and coping with a daily life in which there is no place for humor.
The work of these organizations will be presented in brief talks, and the speakers will explore what kind of social and artistic benefits can emerge from this work.
Speakers:
Annette Grömminger (AUT): Founder of Clowns without Borders Austria
Karola Sakotnik (AUT): Emergency Smile (RED NOSES International)
Hilary Chaplain (USA): The Big Apple Circus Clown Care Hospital Program
Karin Bergstrand (SWE): Member of Clowns without Borders Sweden
Moderation: Marty Huber (AUT): Queer-feminist activist and performance theorist

Through the Pipe' is a traditional clown show. Being performed by two women, this means a re-reading of classic clowning which is entirely written for male clowns. The performers build the show around this challenge, whilst always looking for a laugh, just as in any other clown show, be it for men or women.
Using everyday situations, they perform with different objects like pipes, siphons, masking tape, a one hundred dollar bill, etc. Suddenly these things open the door to another world for them. With imagination, wit, and live music – guitar, flute, violin, and vocals – the two clowns captivate the audience and tell them a story brimming with Brazilian temperament. The color yellow bears major significance – come and see for yourself.
Pelo Cano Compagnie
Paola and Vera from Sao Paulo have been working together regularly for over 17 years. They met in 1992 at the Picadeiro Circus School, after which they were members of various clown groups. They are currently working primarily with Doutores da Alegria and Jogando no Quintal. In 2008 they created “Pelo Cano,” their first and only solo piece, which has since been performed at many South American festivals and can now be seen in Austria for the first time.
