Discourse
Humor in the Crisis
Clown organizations working in crisis and war regions
Talks and Panel discussion
Monday 11/30/15 (7 pm)
At KosmosTheater
Organizations like Clowns without Borders and Red Noses Clowndoctors often carry out missions in regions of war and crisis, as well as in refugee camps in their own countries. For a short time they bring laughter into the lives of people who are suffering due to traumatic experiences and coping with a daily life in which there is no place for humor.
The work of these organizations will be presented in brief talks, and the speakers will explore what kind of social and artistic benefits can emerge from this work.
Speakers:
Annette Grömminger (AUT): Founder of Clowns without Borders Austria
Karola Sakotnik (AUT): Emergency Smile (RED NOSES International)
Hilary Chaplain (USA): The Big Apple Circus Clown Care Hospital Program
Karin Bergstrand (SWE): Member of Clowns without Borders Sweden
Moderation: Marty Huber (AUT): Queer-feminist activist and performance theorist

„Vote for Colette Gomette!“
Hired as security for the new French presidential candidate, she unfortunately knocks out the candidate and slips into her role in order to cover up the mistake. Tough luck. The question is for whom.
The feisty, unrefined, animalistic, and fierce Colette Gomette suddenly finds herself in her element. She hops and jumps, races and listens, she whines and snorts, she discovers the world of politics with passion. Totally wired, she entrances her listeners and enjoys her power, maybe even too much. The world – full of arrogance, megalomania, intolerance, unfairness, and extortion – stops at nothing, not even a clown, or did we misunderstand something?
Colette Gomette invents a poetic clown, who is above our world and offends everyone in our code-filled society. A skit with profound humor evoking hearty laughter.
Hélène Gustin aka Colette Gomette, has been pursuing her clown career since 1996, primarily on stage but also on the street and at all kinds of events. She also works as a clown doctor in a hospital with the French organization Rire Médecin.
Colette Gomette is one-of-a-kind; after her training with Jacques Lecoq, she acted in several plays, put five clown shows on stage, and went on a number of world tours. She also runs workshops, is a trained jazz dancer, burlesque artist, and founded BEC (Brigade d’Ecriture Clownesque) in 2012. As the artistic director she runs seminars in which participants are taught to write clown skits and put them on stage.
