Discourse

Women in the conflicting fields of "art - humour - poverty"
Lectures and panel discussion

Monday, December 1st (6.30 p.m.)
At KosmosTheater

How poor must one be to lose their sense of humour?
How precarious do the circumstances have to be to lose the ability to laugh?
Is humour a question of money?
Is it possible to make good art, if one is poor?
Or is it only possible to make good art, if one is poor?
If poverty is female, why is art so male dominated?

Introductory presentations Yaara Perah (Israel), Geni Viegas (Brazil) and Barbara Kraus (Austria)
followed by a panel discussion

Moderation: Michaela Moser

Translation is provided. Free entry!

Tem Areia no Maiô is the story of four women clowns that decide to go to the beach on a beautiful bright Sunday. The group heads to Copacabana in an old car, and the adventure begins with a flat tire. At the beach, As Marias take off their clothes and parade in their graciously funny bathing suits.
Awkwardly, they face dangerous situations brought about by the sea, the summer rain and, above all, the sand in their bathing suits. They tell jokes, play racket ball and dance to the sound of Roberto Carlos, Elza Soares and Rita Pavone, among others.

Created in 1992 for a street presentation, this play had a long career, which culminated in 2000 with a tour of 10 cities in the Northeast and South of Brazil as part of Palco Giratório, an art program developed and sponsored by Sesc. an art program developed and sponsored by Sesc. This long career was crowned at Festival Internacional de Pallasses de Andorra, in 2003 and now at the international women’s clown festival clownin in Vienna.

The Group
As Marias da Graça first put their red noses on in July 1991 during a workshop delivered by the Argentinean actor Guillermo Angelelli. Then and there, they decided to start a group that would do something entirely new in the country. And they did. They came to develop a pioneer work in Brazil. At the beginning, on Sundays, they began presenting sketches in the streets of Rio de Janeiro, where the population began to get used to and enjoy their clowning.
As Marias chose to perform their numbers for the population in general and on stages in all different parts of the city. Their presentations in the streets and slums are always free. In theatre houses, tickets are very inexpensive. As Marias believe that art should be available to all kinds of people. The group consists of women that work as clowns to express their feminine everyday reality and interfere in the traditional view people have of clowning.

Mission
In 2003, the group founded As Marias da Graça Associação de Mulheres Palhaças (Association of Marias da Graça Women Clowns), whose methodology aims at making a difference in the universe of clowning and expanding the work and the learning process of clowns within a feminine perspective.

For the first time in Austria.
